Counselling and Psychotherapy

Counselling Peterborough

Counselling may help with responses to current life difficulties. These may involve experiencing difficult and painful emotions (for example a loss or bereavement, redundancy, relationships, health matters) . A counselling relationship is a formally contracted relationship to support someone’s experience. This can be short term and focused for example around a particular issue or decision. Sometimes an employer will offer this type of counselling (as part of an Employee Assistance Programme) and offer to fund a limited number of sessions (usually between four to six). Sometimes this is available through your GP (however there can be waiting times) Some people prefer to fund counselling privately and choose to select their own therapist.

During the counselling process it may become apparent that what is currently happening is rooted in history and that further exploration may help someone to understand their own process and gain awareness of their choices. The process may be helpful for several months and is negotiated between client and counsellor. (BACP Ethical Framework) Click Here (UKCP Code of Conduct) Click Here

Psychotherapy Peterborough

Although the process of psychotherapy is the same, a way to define a difference between counselling and psychotherapy is that psychotherapy is working over a longer term at a deeper level. Another difference is that a psychotherapy relationship is with a qualified practitioner, who in order to be UCKP Click Here registered has been required to complete four years postgraduate level training.
